In Interstices, I delve into my decade-long experience living with Parkinson’s (PD), a neurodegenerative disease for which there is currently no cure. Over this period, I have learned to live with the awareness of declining motor skills and impaired balance, along with the attendant non-motor symptoms of fear, anxiety, and disorientation.
Interstices is the second series focused on my journey with Parkinson’s. In Semaphore, I examined the shock and shift in my perspective following diagnosis. Now, after ten years living with Parkinson’s, I also observe the convergent and overlapping forces of both the illness and aging.
Through photography, I bring these internal challenges to light. As I plan shoots or capture spontaneous moments, my photography enables me to recognize a mirroring of my own struggles to stay positive, to decipher symptom progression, and to withstand the ups and downs as I connect with the light and dark.
Recent studies have shown that creating and beholding art can positively impact brain health. I lean into this possibility. I photograph discoveries and constructions inspired by the oscillations of my psychological, physical, and spiritual perspectives to build resilience against new obstacles I face.
With Interstices, I navigate the challenge of looking into the space between now and the time when I may be less capable. This visual inquiry both motivates and gives me strength to negotiate the uncertainty ahead.
